From healthcare to hotels, senior living to sports and leisure and fine dining to defence, Compass Group UK & Ireland has the recipe for success.

The company began life back in 1941, when Jack Bateman founded factory canteens to feed British workers supporting the war effort, and since then has grown to become a world-leading food and support services company, with an annual £2 billion turnover and a 56,000 workforce.

Every day, Compass serves millions of customers – in locations ranging from school canteens and executive dining rooms – and its focus on great service and great results means that working in line with world-class standards is an integral part of the business.

Choosing ISOQAR

In a major project completed in 2011, every one of Compass’s business sites – some 5,000 or so – were certified to three key, internationally recognised standards: ISO 9001, for quality management; ISO 14001, for environmental management; and OHSAS 18001, for occupational health and safety management.

It was a massive undertaking for Alan North, ISO Compliance Manager for Compass Group UK & Ireland, but a tried and trusted working relationship with ISOQAR, developed over 10 years, played a significant part in ensuring successful completion.

Alan joined the defence arm of Compass as its ISO Manager in 1995, following a 25-year career in the British Army. ISOQAR, who were already known to Compass, were the first certification service providers he contacted and he’s been contacting them ever since, as he’s moved through the company to his current role.

A continued partnership

He says: “I have worked with other providers but I have stuck with ISOQAR, not least because I have been working with the same people there for 10 years and I find that consistency of personnel invaluable”.

“Peter Parr has been my lead auditor since the beginning and we have built up an excellent working relationship. As a whole, ISOQAR are easy to work with – flexible, firm, fair and also the most reasonably priced of any provider we have looked at”.

“Having people around, like Peter, that have stayed with me makes life a lot easier and particularly so on our major certification project in 2011, which involved 100 days of audting. Now it is completed, we are still working with ISOQAR for five days every month on assessments and audits”.

“I know and trust ISOQAR, I value their skills and knowledge and I also know I can go to them at any time, and that makes a big difference.”
