Alcumus is delighted to announce that First Utility has successfully gained certification to ISO 14001.
First Utility is the largest independent energy company in the UK providing a challenge to the ‘Big Six’ incumbent suppliers by helping customers spend less on their gas and electricity.
Keen to demonstrate its environmental conscience and best practice management approach, the company made a commitment to working towards ISO 14001 certification in December 2013. The decision received full support of First Utility directors and board members and as a result Alcumus ISOQAR was appointed as a certification partner having had experience of working with a number of organisations within the energy supply industry.
To ensure that the standard was correctly interpreted and that the company was on the right track, First Utility engaged the services of a management systems consultant and also appointed a Health, Safety & Environmental Officer internally. This structure has ensured that the stringent requirements of the standard have been met and implemented throughout the business.
Dave Taylor, Health, Safety and Environmental Officer at First Utility said: “During both stage 1 and stage 2 audits we found the auditor to be extremely helpful and approachable in understanding our environmental management processes – both complementing successes and identifying potential areas for improvement.”
Martin Smith, Alcumus CEO said: “First Utility should be very proud of this achievement. A well-designed environmental management system can benefit an organisation in a number of ways such as improved operational control, enhanced reputation and of course clear demonstration that the company is taking steps to reduce its environmental impacts. It can also be used to attain corporate goals for reduced energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, helping to substantiate claims for a reduced carbon footprint.”
As First Utility continues to grow and take on further office accommodation, ISO 14001 forms part of the integral initial set up ensuring continued compliance improvement across the whole of the business operation.
