Under the Parental Leave Directive, with effect from 8th March 2013, the right to unpaid parental leave increases from 13 weeks to 18 weeks.
If this is something you have previously heard of, this is because the Directive actually came into force on 8 March 2012, however the Government made use of an exception which allows member states to have an extra year for implementation, hence the effective date being the 8th March 2013.
This right applies to every employee who is the parent of a child and they are entitled to up to 18 weeks’ unpaid parental leave during the first five years of the child’s life. However employers should be aware that with effect from 2015, the right to take this unpaid leave will apply for each child up to the age of 18 and will no longer be capped at the first five years of age.
Adoptive parents are also entitled to parental leave and they must take the leave by the fifth anniversary of the adoption or by the child’s 18th birthday, whichever occurs sooner.
For Alcumus HR clients, your online Policy & Procedures Manual has been updated to reflect these changes.
