Do you need BS EN 1090?

Does the BS EN 1090 standard apply to your business? Alcumus ISOQAR’s Colin Bracewell offers a couple of sources that will help clarify your position.

There are, however, many companies still not registered. Often, this is because some are a little bit intimidated by the perceived difficulty of doing it. However, there is no need to be put off if you use one of the consultants from our ISOQAR Associate Network.

Anyway, one of the first things you need to do is determine what is in and out of ‘scope’ for BS EN 1090. In other words: does it apply to your products?

Helpfully, there is a document from the European Commission that sets out what’s ‘in’ and ‘out’ of scope regarding BS EN 1090 ‘CEN/TR 17052:2017’. Use your favourite search engine to look for “Guidelines on implementing EN 1090-1+A1:2011, Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures – Part 1: Requirements for conformity assessment of structural components”.

In addition, on the European Commission website there is an FAQ that addresses CE marking regarding 1090 where, for example, the ‘hot’ topic of handrails and balustrades is explained. Scroll down on the FAQ to point 31 for more information.
