Dominic Myers: Training Delivery Manager at Alcumus ISOQARHow did you become a trainer?

I first got involved with management systems in the late eighties with BS 5750, the forerunner to ISO 9001. Over the years I developed my career to become a Quality Engineer then Quality Manager whilst gaining a degree in Business Studies before moving further into education with a Post Graduate Certificate in Adult Education. I then spent several years teaching business related subjects (CIPD and ILM), which led me into management systems consultancy and into my current role as a Management Systems Trainer.

What do you like most about the role?

Working as a trainer is challenging but fun. The most interesting aspect of the role is understanding how different types of organisation adapt and adopt the ISO standards in line with the context of their organisation and the specific risks and opportunities that this creates.

What attributes do you think are important to look out for when a company is selecting their internal audit teams?

An internal auditor must have the ability to communicate effectively and confidently at all levels of their organisation. They also need to take an independent and fair approach.

What advice would you give to a delegate who wants to excel at being an auditor?

Work hard to understand the risks and opportunities within your organisation and be prepared to back up your audit findings with clear evidence. Underpin your auditing experience with CQI/IRCA qualifications - no one can take these away from you!

What inspires you?

It’s a bit of a clich√©, but the reason I’m drawn to training is that effective teaching and learning can make a difference to individuals and organisations. I love “seeing the light come on”, so to speak.

What do you do when you aren’t working?

I have four children, so they keep me busy. I do enjoy watching football and going to gigs - when I have the time!
