BS OHSAS 18001

The standard for occupational health and safety

What is OHSAS 18001?

BS OHSAS 18001 is an internationally recognised British standard for occupational health and safety management. It enables organisations to manage risk and help aid compliance with legislation, as well as maintain a safe and healthy working environment for employees, visitors and others.

Who is it for?

OHSAS 18001 is suitable for any organisation that wants a robust health and safety management system. This is especially important in high risk industries such as construction, manufacturing and logistics.

How can OHSAS 18001 help your organisation?

  • Cost savings through reducing or eliminating costs associated with work-related injuries or illness

  • Enables measurement of health and safety performance by establishing a framework for controlling and measuring health and safety performance

  • Helps reduce the occurrence of accidents and incidences

  • Helps you stay abreast of relevant legislation and reduces the likelihood of prosecution and fines

Once you decide to implement OHSAS 18001, the first step is to learn about its best practice recommendations and compare these to your existing processes. This will help you identify any gaps or weaknesses in your current health and safety management systems, and give practical advice on how to improve.

There are two main options for this stage – you can get one of our starter packs, or you can hire an OHSAS 18001 consultant to guide you through the process.

The next step is to plan how to introduce the key principles of health and safety management into your organisation.

Update or renew your processes according to the guidelines set out in OHSAS 18001, then communicate the changes internally. If you need extra support during this stage, an OHSAS 18001 consultant will be able to advise you and provide you with a gap analysis pre-assessment to make sure you’re ready for certification.

Once you and your consultant are satisfied that your health and safety processes align with the principles set out in OHSAS 18001, it’s time to book your certification.

We will complete a full audit of your business processes. If they meet the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001, we will then issue you with certification.
